13-year-old killed while 2 juveniles play with a loaded gun in Region 8

BRADFORD, AR (KAIT) – A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed after two other juveniles were playing with a loaded gun.

The shooting happened at 287 Watson Road, in the town of Bradford in White County.

According to the White County Sheriff's Department, around Noon Sunday police responded to a shooting on Watson Road. When police arrived they found a 13-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Investigators say two 14-year-old boys picked up a .22 caliber rifle that was leaning in a corner by a door. According to the shooter and the other witness, while one 14-year-old was looking at the gun it went off striking the 13-year-old in the back of the head while he was sitting on the couch. Police say both boys ran outside to get help and dial 9-1-1.

The 13-year-old was taken by ambulance to the White County Medical Center, and later to the Children's Hospital in Little Rock where he died from his injuries.

Both 14-year-olds told police they had no idea the gun was loaded.

Police are not releasing any names yet, and say the shooting remains under investigation.
