Tennessee-Martin rallies past Red Wolves 17-12

MARTIN, Tenn. (KAIT) - The Arkansas State Red Wolves (18-11) saw three leads go by the wayside as the Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks rallied each time to take a 17-12 victory Tuesday night at Skyhawk Field.

The Red Wolves led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third, 10-5 going into the bottom of the seventh and 12-11 entering the bottom of the eighth, but the Skyhawks scored six times in their final at bat to secure the win.

Arkansas State rattled out 18 hits on the night, their second-highest total of the season, but UTM matched the output and took advantage of seven unearned runs to improve to 13-15 on the year.

The Red Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when catcher Kyle DeGrace delivered an RBI single through the right side of the Skyhawk defense, and third baseman Jordan Castaldo extended his hit streak to 19 games in the third with his first career home run. Castaldo's two-run shot straight out to center field stretched the Red Wolves' lead to 3-0, but UTM countered with four runs in the bottom of the inning to go on top.

Catcher Ty Nelson singled to send home the Skyhawks' first run, followed by a two-run home run from first baseman Wes Patterson and a solo shot from right fielder Jordan Owen for the 4-3 UTM advantage.

Arkansas State tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth when center fielder Michael Faulkner singled in a run, then broke out with with six runs in the fifth to regain the lead at 10-4.

Right fielder Todd Baumgartner got the scoring going in the fifth for ASU when he sent a sacrifice fly into left field, and the Red Wolves strung together six consecutive two-out hits, including RBI hits from left fielder Logan Uxa, shortstop Jordan Kimball, Faulkner and second baseman Giovanni Garcia.

Tennessee-Martin answered with an unearned score in the bottom of the inning when Nelson singled in a run to cut the ASU lead to 10-5, then answered with six two-out, unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 11-10 lead.

With two outs on the board, the Skyhawks used a pair of walked-in runs to begin their rally in the sixth, then got a three-run double from Patterson and an RBI double from Owen to go back on top.

Faulkner drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to tie the game at 11-11, and Kimball did the same in the eighth to put Arkansas State back on top 12-11.

Patterson drove in his sixth run of the night with a double in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game at 12-12, and an RBI single from Owen later in the inning gave the Skyhawks a 13-12 lead. Tennessee-Martin tacked on four more runs before the inning was over, and the Red Wolves were unable to threaten in the ninth.

Five pitchers saw action on the night for ASU, with freshman Daniel Wright (3-1) taking the loss after giving up four runs on five hits in one and one-third innings. Junior starter Brad Allen lasted five and two-thirds innings, giving up eight runs (four earned) on nine hits, with six strikeouts and one walk.

Tennessee-Martin closer Wes Alsup picked up his first win of the season. Alsup did not give up a run or a hit, struck out one and walked two in one and one-third innings.

Faulkner went 4-for-5 with three RBIs to lead ASU, while Patterson had three hits and six RBIs to lead UTM.

The two teams will meet again today in Jonesboro. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.
