Cape Girardeau, MO (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team (6-7) swept Southeast Missouri State (2-16) by a score of 7-0 in Cape Girardeau, MO Thursday afternoon.
"It was good to play a match after being off for such a long time," said ASU head coach Marcia Williams. "Hopefully we can build on this match and play well again tomorrow against a good St. Louis University team."
The Red Wolves took all three matches in doubles competition. Elne Barnard and Rone' van Wyk topped Alyce Kelly and Nikole Novikova 8-3 at No. 1. Maria Alemán and Andreea Georgescu notched a win at No. 2 over Ashton Hartley and Diana Donoslovic 8-2, while Jenny Herring teamed up with Menna Kamal to defeat Laura Garcia and Sarah Pettigrew 8-0.
Arkansas State dominated singles action as well, winning at all six positions. Barnard defeated Novikova 6-0 in the first set at No. 1, and the players retired after that set. Herring topped Kelly 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, while van Wyk posted a straight-set 6-1, 6-0 win over Elise Nattier at No. 3. Kamal went 6-3, 6-2 over Hartley at No. 4, and Ioana Teu defeated Donoslovic 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5. Tina Ojdanic rounded out the sweep with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Pettigrew at No. 6.
The Red Wolves wrap up their road trip when they travel to St. Louis Friday afternoon to take on the Billikens of St. Louis University at 3:30 p.m.
