Missouri Senate panel cuts county inmate payments

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) - Counties would share a portion of Missouri's budget pain under a Senate plan to reduce payments for housing inmates.

Missouri reimburses counties for part of their costs for jailing people who ultimately are convicted of state crimes.

The payment rate currently is $22 per day for each inmate.

But the Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday approved a $5 million cut in county inmate reimbursements. That would drop the daily payment rate to $19.58 per inmate.

The cut is not final, because the budget still must be passed by the Senate and reconciled with a House version.
