Lady Red Wolves and Anna Carling Tied For 1st At EKU Lady Colonel Classic

RICHMOND, Ky. (4/10/10) - The Arkansas State women's golf team is in a three-way tie with Memphis and Morehead State for first place at the EKU?Lady Colonel Classic after completing the first two rounds of play Saturday at the Arlington Club with a combined 605.

The Red Wolves were led by freshman Anna Carling, who is tied for first place in the individual standings after shooting a combined 146.  She carded an opening-round 74 and followed with a 72 for the second 18 holes, which was the lowest of the day by an ASU?player and tied her personal best round this year.

The Red Wolves jumped from fifth place after the first round to the top of the standings by the end of the day, cutting nine strokes off their first-round score with a second-round 298.  The 298 was ASU's second lowest round of the season behind only its 295 posted in its season-opening tournament.

"We had a slow start, but squeaked out with a 307 this morning," said ASU?head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm.  "This afternoon, we were fired up about playing like we are capable and we finished strong. Anna Carling continues to have solid rounds and Jennifer Loiacano and Jennifer Welch threw a better number up this afternoon. Cassie Huffer is hitting the ball great, but had putting challenges that prevented her from being around par each round.  We look forward to the round tomorrow.  We are ready to focus on a good final round, and possibly our second win of the season."

Including Carling, three ASU players at least tied their lowest single-round score of the spring on the day.  Jennifer Welch, tied for 14th place with a combined 152, shot a second-round 74 that was her best this spring.  Jennifer Loiacano posted her lowest score this spring with a second-round 75 and is tied for 18th place with a total 153.

Cassie Huffer narrowly missed ending the day in the top-25 individual standings as well, finishing tied for 26th place with a 155.  Adrian Sportsman is tied for 53rd place with a combined 162.

The final round of the EKU Lady Colonel Classic will begin Sunday morning.
