ASU's Anna Carling wins medalist honors at EKU Lady Colonel Classic

Richmond, KY (KAIT) – Freshman Anna Carling took individual medalist honors and led the Arkansas State women's golf team to a third-place finish Sunday at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic, where the Red Wolves shot a three-round 913 and had three players finish in the top-25 individual standings.

Carling claimed the first tournament championship of her young career and became the third ASU player to win a title this season, joining Jennifer Welch and Cassie Huffer.  ASU entered Sunday's final round in a three-way tie for first place, but still picked up its fourth top-three finish of the season.

Carling, who entered today's play tied for first place, turned in her highest score of the tournament in the final round with a 76, but still finished with a combined 222 to top Morehead State's Marisa Kamelgarn by one stroke.  Carling shot an opening-round 74 and carded a 72, her lowest score of the season, during the second round that ended Saturday's play.

The Red Wolves opened the tournament with a 307, but came back to shoot a 298, its second lowest single-round score of the season, for the second 18 holes that moved it to the top of the standings at the end of Saturday's action.  While ASU shot a final-round 308 that was its highest of the tournament, it was still the third lowest score of the day.

"I'm extremely proud of Anna," said ASU head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm.  "She has been close for several events now, and it's good to see her seal the deal.  Our team finishing in third place is disappointing to us because we made some mental errors that cost us the tournament, but we will use those hard learned lessons to take us into the conference tournament better prepared."

Joining Carling in the top 25 for ASU were Jennifer Welch and Cassie Huffer, who finished tied for 10th place and tied for 23rd, respectively.  Welch, who had her best outing of the spring and collected her fourth top-10 finish, shot a combined 240 with a best round of 74.  Huffer picked up her eighth top-25 finish this year, shooting a 231 with a best round of 76 posted today.

ASU's Jennifer Loiacano finished tied for 43rd place with a 240 and Adrian Sportsman tied for 47th place with 242.

Morehead State finished first among the 17-team field with a 905, while Memphis shot a 909 to take second place and the Red Wolves rounded out the top three finishers.

ASU will next compete at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, scheduled for April 20-22 in Florence, Ala.
