TIKRIT, IRAQ -- Seven American P.O.W's have been found and recovered from enemy hands. The seven prisoners of war were found near Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, where fierce fighting with Iraqi forces is continuing.

A group of Iraqi soldiers approached the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Company accompanied by the P.O.W.'s. The Iraqis had reportedly been abandoned by their commanding officers and turned over the Americans because they thought it was the right thing to do.

Two of the seven had been on an army Apache attack helicopter that went down on March 23rd while the other five were members of the 507th Maintenance Company who were ambushed the same day. All of the freed P.O.W.'s were taken by helicopter to a military base near Kut and then flown on C-130s to Kuwait. Two had suffered gunshot wounds although all were described as being in good shape.
