Disabled woman left in car while caregiver gambles

KANSAS CITY, MO (AP) - Authorities say a state employee left a severely mentally retarded woman in her car for hours while she gambled at a Kansas City casino.

Clay County Prosecutor Daniel White says the 66-year-old woman was not seriously hurt when she was left for more than two hours on Wednesday in a car at the Ameristar Casino.

White says 27-year-old Dru S. Glenn of Independence was charged Thursday with misdemeanor elder abuse. He says the charge is a misdemeanor only because the victim was not hurt.

The Kansas City Star reports that Glenn is a Missouri Department of Mental Health employee who was supposed to be supervising the victim. The department fired Glenn Wednesday evening.

Health department spokesman Bob Bax says the victim, who lives in Independence, was supposed to be at a medical appointment.
