Pulaski County deputy critical after jail attack

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - A Pulaski County deputy is hospitalized in critical condition after being attacked by an inmate at the county jail.

Authorities say 63-year-old Deputy William Owens was attacked Saturday afternoon by 28-year-old inmate Deon Earnest. Deputies say Earnest stabbed Owens with pencils then beat and kicked him.

Lt. Carl Minden says Owens has a skull fracture and fractured bones in his face.

Online court records show Earnest was being held on weapons and terroristic threatening charges. The records did not indicate whether he had an attorney.
