Muscle Shoals, AL (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's golf team cut three strokes off its first round score and climbed three places in the standings Tuesday at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, shooting a second-round 306 to end the day in sixth place with a combined 615.
Four out of ASU's five competing golfers lowered their score in the second round and moved up in the individual standings, including Jennifer Welch with the team's best score of the day at 75. Welch is tied for 14th place with a combined 152 to lead the Red Wolves after finishing yesterday's play tied for 23rd.
ASU will enter tomorrow's final round two strokes ahead of North Texas and trailing fifth-place South Alabama by eight strokes. Denver, ranked 18th in the nation, leads the 11-team field with a 579, while Middle Tennessee is in second place with a 598 and UALR and Florida International are tied for third with a 600.
Cassie Huffer dropped from 13th place to 21st place, but is still one of three ASU players among the top 25 leaders. Huffer added three strokes to her first-round score with a 78 on Tuesday for a combined 153, while Anna Carling shot a 76 to give her a two-round 154 that moved her from tied for 32nd place to tied for 22nd.
Jennifer Loiacano also improved on her first round, shooting a 77 today after posting a 79 yesterday. Her combined 156 leaves her tied for 31st place. Adrian Sportsman shot a second-round 80 and now has a combined 162 that places her tied for 47th place.
The final round will begin Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.
