ASU Women's Tennis eliminated by FIU in Sun Belt Quarterfinals

New Orleans (ASU) - No. 1 seed FIU overcame losing the doubles point and a six-hour rain delay Friday to defeat No. 9 seed Arkansas State 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Tennis Championship.

Though FIU's pair of Christine Seredni and Mariana Muci were able to get an 8-1 doubles win over Ioana Teu and Tina Ojdanic, Arkansas State captured courts No. 1 and No. 3 with Elne Barnard and Rone' van Wyk defeating Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo 8-4 and Jenny Herring and Menna Kamal defeating Maria Vallasciani and Maria Spenceley 8-6.

Rain set in during the early goings of singles play at the UNO Tennis Center and play was moved to the Hilton New Orleans Riverside indoor courts.  From there, FIU gained control – but not without a fight.

Brito overcame a disappointing doubles match to defeat Barnard 6-2, 6-1 on the No. 1 court to tie the match and Castillo did her part as well for the Panthers defeating Kamal 6-1, 6-1 on the No. 5 court.

The final two matches both went three sets as Vallasciani defeated Aleman 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 and Seredni defeated Herring 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.
