Benton celebrates 150th but no time capsule

BENTON, Mo. (AP) - The small southeast Missouri town of Benton has begun its sesquicentennial celebration, but the location of a time capsule buried a half-century ago remains a mystery.

More than 300 people attended the kickoff event Saturday despite rain that moved activities indoors. The Southeast Missourian reports that many of those in attendance wore clothing reflecting the styles of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The town was formed in 1860.

Aside from the weather, the biggest hitch was the failure to find a time capsule buried during the centennial celebration in 1960. Event organizers believe it is buried near the courthouse.

A new time capsule will be buried in June.
