Muscle Shoals, AL (ASU) - The Arkansas State men's golf team cut five strokes off its first-round score and moved up one place in the standings at the Sun Belt Conference Championships on Tuesday, shooting a second-round 298 and ending the day in seventh place with a combined 601.
Four of ASU's five competing golfers moved up in the individual standings and three improved on their first-round score Tuesday. Wessel Zwiegers made the biggest jump for the Red Wolves, moving from tied for 27th place at the end of the first round to tied for 15th place through 36 holes. After posting a first-round 76, Zwiegers came back to card a second-round 72 that is the lowest round of the tournament by an ASU player.
Chris Pledger carded a second-round 74, two strokes under his first-round total, and ended the day tied for 20th place along with teammate Kell Shenep. While Shenep shot a 75 for the second consecutive day, he moved up two places in the standings.
Tyler Thompson cut two strokes off his first-round total with a 77 for the second 18 holes and ended the day tied for 40th place with a combined 156. Lloyd du Preez was tied for 27th place entering the second round, but fell into a tie for 51st after posting a second-round 84.
The Red Wolves are just one stroke behind sixth-place Louisiana-Lafayette and within three strokes of fourth-place North Texas and Louisiana-Monroe. The Red Wolves' second round 298 was the fourth lowest round of the day. Despite adding 14 strokes to its first-round total, Middle Tennessee continues to lead the 12-team field with a combined 586. New Orleans is in second place with a 589 and South Alabama in third with a 590.
The SBC Championship's third and final round will begin Wednesday morning.
