JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Sikeston Police spent most of Tuesday trying to put out a fire caused by a natural gas pipeline that had been cut.
According to the Sikeston Police Department, a worker renovating a vacant home on Lanning Street severed the gas line with a backhoe. A small trash fire burning in the backyard ignited the gas line.
The pressurized gas was sending a fireball about 15 feet in the air. Atmos Energy arrived a short time later and turned off the gas, extinguishing the fire.
No one was injured in the fire, but police and energy officials stress the importance of knowing where lines are buried before you dig.
