According to Sheriff Terry Stevens, 38-year-old Deputy Matt Cummins was traveling on Highway 61 around 4:30pm when a pickup truck crashed into the driver's side of his squad car.
It took rescue crews, using the jaws of life, more than 45 minutes to free Deputy Cummins from the crushed car.
Witnesses say he was conscious and talking at the scene. He was airlifted to the Med in Memphis where he was last reported in stable condition.
The driver of the pickup truck, who has not been identified, was not hurt.
