Poplar Bluff Police radio tower damaged in lightning strike

POPLAR BLUFF, MO (KFVS) - A lightning strike in last weekend's storms caused more than $10,000 worth of damage to the Poplar Bluff Police Department.

The station's radio tower took a direct hit from lightning around 7 p.m. Friday.

The lightning strike also took out telephone lines, computer equipment, and a security camera.

Repairs were made Wednesday on the 140 foot tower, after the damage caused problems for officers in the field, as they had weak radio signals for a few hours during the storm.

"It was a momentary glitch where they don't realize the officer is out in the field," said Deputy Chief Jeff Rolland. "They know something happened, but they're not sure what happened and they can't communicate."

The electrical systems in two patrol cars parked near the tower were also damaged.

No one was hurt.
