Prison spokeswoman says Arkansas inmate took own life

VARNER, AR (AP) - A prison spokeswoman says an Arkansas inmate serving a life-without-parole sentence for murder has taken his own life.

Prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler said Sunday that the prisoner was being held in an isolation cell of the Varner Maximum Security Unit. She said guards discovered the inmate's body when they made a routine check on him at 3:18 p.m. Sunday.

Tyler said the guards called an ambulance and immediately began efforts to revive the inmate, who had braided a bed sheet, looped it through bars on a door and around his neck. She said the ambulance took the inmate to the prison infirmary, where a doctor pronounced him dead.

She said the inmate's name would not be made public until his family had been notified.
