Firefighters battle major fire at Monette grocery store

MONETTE, AR (KAIT) –Several region 8 fire crews battled a major fire at the Farmer's Market grocery store on Monday night.

Firefighters from Monette, Manila, Lake City, and Caraway responded to the 75 year old store, located on West Drew Street, after receiving a call around 8:20 p.m.  The fire spread quickly and burned on into early Tuesday morning.

Farm trucks were called in to supply water to the scene, and Highway 18 was blocked off until the fire was under control.

Monette Fire Department Assitant Chief David Clark believes the fire started in the meat section and spread from there. One reason it spread so rapidly was because the building had two ceilings allowing for optimal kindling and oxygen.

No injuries are reported, and the exact cause is yet to be determined.

Farmer's Market is owned by G&W Foods.
