June 1 trial date set for Arkansas county judge

BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - A June 1 trial date has been set for Benton County Judge David Bisbee on misdemeanor charges related to the way he awarded three county projects.

Bisbee's attorney - former Congressman Asa Hutchinson - says the date was set during a Tuesday conference call with Benton County prosecutor Van Stone and Special Judge John Walton Cole.

The trial will come after the May 18 primary elections in which Bisbee faces three opponents for the Republican nomination. Hutchinson says he would have preferred a trial before the primary - but there was no way for that to occur.

Bisbee has pleaded innocent and says he turned down a prosecutor's offer to resign instead of facing charges.
