BONO, AR (KAIT) – Last November the Bono Bridge sustained heavy damage when a two-car crash damaged one of its support piers.
Craighead County officials say the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe railway company, which owns the bridge, is responsible for its repairs. But, so far, it has done nothing and the bridge remains closed to residents.
The railroad company has no use for the bridge since it goes over the tracks and doesn't affect their railways.
On Friday night, citizens gathered in the Bono city hall to sign a petition urging the company to fix the bridge. They're hoping the petition will force the railroad to take action.
One of those attending the meeting was Steve Clane. He said if the petition doesn't achieve the necessary change residents will consider other options. "Maybe put it on the registry of historic sites or even a lawsuit, maybe" Clane told Region 8 News.
The bridge has been a piece of the community since 1882 and a significant part of the town's history.
