Missing woman's husband pleads not guilty

LIBERTY, MO (AP) - A Missouri man has pleaded not guilty to charges filed in the death of his wife, who has been missing more than a year.

Shon Pernice appeared in Clay County court on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. The 35-year-old defendant was indicted Tuesday in the death of his wife, Renee M. Pernice.

Shon Pernice had been considered a person of interest since 35-year-old Renee Pernice was reported missing Jan. 2, 2009. Her body has not been found.

The Kansas City Star reported that Pernice requested a public defender office to represent him. His next court appearance is May 27, when the judge will consider that request.

Pernice is jailed in Clay County on a $1 million bond.
