Jonesboro (ASU) - Behind the strength of 16 hits featuring seven extra-base hits, including three home runs, the Arkansas State baseball team (28-25, 16-13) claimed a 16-8 victory over Arkansas-Little Rock (28-25, 11-16) on Friday night at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field to even the three-game Sun Belt Conference series with the Trojans.
Eight different ASU players crossed the plate as the Red Wolves scored in seven different innings, including six frames with at least two runs. Kyle DeGrace led ASU's offensive explosion, recording two home runs and seven RBI.
The Trojans plated two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score 5-5, but ASU exploded for 11 runs over its next three at-bats to pull away.
DeGrace broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when he sent his first home run over the left field fence to give the Red Wolves an 8-5 lead. The next inning saw ASU score once before Murray Watts hit a three-run blast to right field to push ASU's lead to 12-5.
UALR pulled within 12-6 with a run in the top of the seventh, but ASU again tacked on four more runs when DeGrace hit a grand slam in the bottom half of the inning to open up a commanding 10-run lead.
UALR scored twice in the ninth inning to set the final score at 16-8. Starting pitcher Jacob Lee gave up five runs, but just two earned, over six innings while recording seven strikeouts to get the victory on the mound and improve to 7-3 on the season.
Todd Baumgartner and Watts both finished with a team-high three hits for the Red Wolves, while Michael Faulkner, Giovanni Garcia, Jordan Castaldo, and DeGrace all posted two hits. ASU's other two hits came from Josh DeMoney and Jordan Kimball.
ASU and UALR will both play their regular-season finale to wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
