Services for 2 W. Memphis officers set for Monday

WEST MEMPHIS, AR (AP) - Funerals for both West Memphis police officers slain by gunfire after a traffic stop on Interstate 40 will be held Monday in the town's high school. A service for Sgt. Brandon Paudert, 39, son of Police Chief Robert Paudert, is set for 10 a.m. in Lehr Arena at West Memphis High School.

The arena will also be the site for a 2 p.m. funeral for Officer Bill Evans, 38. Paudert and Evans were killed Thursday after Evans stopped a minivan traveling on I-40 and Paudert arrived shortly after as backup. The occupants of the minivan, Jerry Kane, 45, of Forest, Ohio, and his son Joseph, believed to be 16, were themselves killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers on the parking lot of a Wal-Mart store about 90 minutes after Paudert and Evans died.

The Crittenden County sheriff and a deputy were wounded in that shootout. Authorities said the elder Kane used the Internet to question federal and local governments' authority over him, and had a history of run-ins with police.
