NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - When the doors opened at noon a steady stream of job seekers came through the doors.
I saw people who were looking for a career change, their first job, hoping to return to work after a layoff and those with skills that were hoping to put them to good use.
Tony Phillips has been looking for work for 8 months. A machine operator by trade he was hoping to find something in an industrial plant.
Jon Chadwell, the Executive Director for the Newport Economic Development Commission told me they had over 100 jobs to offer. Some companies were taking applications for later hires.
This is the 5th annual job fair and the job openings were as varied as the applicants. Everything from nurses aides to truck drivers to wait people.
Jennifer Noll was trying to get back to work after a long period. She felt pretty confident that she was going to get a job. Noll said that the great thing about a job fair is that in this current economy it was great because many don't have the gas to go from door to door looking for work and this had them all under one roof at one time.
I watched as applicants filled out and copied applications so they could be distributed to various prospective employers. All in all it was a good day as over 200 people applied for work and several were hired on the spot and told to report for work tomorrow at 8.
Is Newport on the Road to Recovery? Slowly, Chadwell says, very slowly.
