Arkansas man acquitted of killing Jonesboro man at Conway police station

CONWAY, AR (AP) - A Faulkner County jury has acquitted a man of second-degree murder in a fatal shooting that happened in the parking lot of the Conway Police Department last year.

The panel deliberated nine hours before finding Cortez Waller not guilty of murder in the death of Chris Childress.

Police say Childress had followed Waller to the station on July 15, 2010. Waller testified that Childress approached him in a threatening manner before he shot him.

Investigators say Childress' fiance had a previous relationship with Waller.

Childress' mother, Darlene Weathers, asked how a man can get gunned down in front of his children and the shooter walk away.

Waller's attorney, Frank Shaw, told KLRT-TV that Childress' family has lost a loved one and Waller will carry the burden of the shooting forever.
