Ryan Ludwick begins rehab assignment in Memphis

ST. LOUIS (AP) - As Ryan Ludwick begins a rehab assignment from

a calf injury, the St. Louis Cardinals' outfielder hopes his stay

with Triple-A Memphis will be brief.

Ludwick has been out since June 26, and tried to come back too

soon earlier this month before going on the 15-day disabled list.

He passed several tests Monday before getting the go-ahead for a

rehab stint that was to begin Tuesday.

Another injured Cardinals regular, David Freese, may be further

away. Freese has been on the DL since June 28 with a bone bruise

on his right ankle, and broke his left big toe when he dropped a

weight while working out. Manager Tony La Russa revealed the

setback Monday.
