Police: Region 8 Man shoots woman, himself

STEELE, MO (KAIT) -Steele Police Officers responded to N First Street on Saturday after receiving reports that a woman was shot in the back.

In a news release, officers found Laura Mayberry, 39, of Steele suffering from a gunshot wound in her back.  During the investigation, Sgt. George located a second person who had fled from the scene before police arrived; officers say he had accidentally shot himself in the leg.

According to the Steele Police Department, the 19-year-old male told officers he had accidentally shot himself in the leg while riding in the back seat of the victim's car. The male was allegedly intoxicated while trying to clear the chamber of a .25 caliber handgun. While he was clearing the chamber, the gun went off, and the bullet traveled through the male subject's leg into the victim's back.

The gun was thrown aside as the male fled the scene, but was recovered by investigators and taken as evidence.

Mayberry was flown to the Med in Memphis for medical treatment, and the male was treated at the Pemiscot county Hospital for minor injuries.

After being released, the male was arrested and transported to the Pemiscot County Justice Center pending formal charges for Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

Also responding to the scene were deputies from the Pemiscot County Sheriff's Office and Emergency Medical Services.
