Region 8 man stabbed in eye, police looking for suspect

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Jonesboro officers are looking for a person who stabbed a man in the eye after he refused to give him money or cigarettes in a grocery store parking lot.

Officer Chad Elrod met with the victim, 55-year-old Michael Settlemoir of Rector, at the St. Bernard's Regional Medical Center. Although Settlemoir couldn't remember the exact details of what happened, he did say it happened around 9:30 Tuesday morning.

According to reports, a black man wearing an orange shirt came up to Settlemoir at the Bill's Fresh Market on the corner of Johnson Avenue and Fisher Street and asked him for money and cigarettes. When Settlemoir said "no," the man attacked him and stabbed him in the eye.

According to a witness, the suspect did have an object in his hand, but it was unclear what the object may have been. Prior to the attack, the witness, who came to the store with Settlemoir, was also approached by the same man who asked for a cigarette.

Settlemoir suffered a cut just above his right eye inside the socket. According to officials, the injury was from a knife or a similar object.  At the time of the report, Settlemoir was being transferred to the Memphis hospital in an attempt to save his eye.

If anyone has any information on this incident, please call the Jonesboro Police Department at (870) 935-5562.
