14-year-old to appear in court after brother dies

WALNUT RIDGE, AR (KAIT) – A 14-year-old boy who police say shot and killed his 11-yeard-old  brother last year is scheduled to appear in Lawrence County juvenile court Wednesday.

Jace Freeman, was shot in the head July 18, 2009 at his great-grandmother's home in Smithville and died one day later.

Initially, neither a suspect nor a weapon could be identified causing investigators to believe a stray bullet killed Jace, but a week later the child's brother said the two were playing cops and robbers when Jace accidentally shot himself.

According to reports, the brother originally told investigators he hid the gun because he didn't want others to think Jace shot himself intentionally, but during later interviews, the brother admitted to planning the shooting.

No motives have been released.

Prosecutors cannot release the boy's name or say what he's been charged with unless he is charged as an adult.
