Ark. company ordered to remove hazardous materials

ROGERS, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality says a bankrupt Rogers business must have all hazardous substances removed from its facility by Oct. 15. The agency issued a emergency order Monday to Haz-Mert, requiring bankruptcy trustee John Lee to submit an inspection report and notify the department within 24 hours of the discovery of any leaking containers.

Environmental officials were conducting a routine inspection at the former hazardous waste facility last month when they smelled a pesticide odor coming from a warehouse.

Officials say containers of flammable liquids and liquid oxidizers were leaking toward each other along the floor, which could have resulted in a fire or chemical reaction. The spill has been cleaned up. Haz-Mert president Shannon Weathers couldn't be reached for comment Monday night.
