Teens help Region 8 charity save $7,000

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – These days everyone is looking to save money, even charities!  With the help of teen volunteers this summer, City Youth Ministries has saved $7,000.

The junior volunteers clean, help out with the younger kids, and prepare food while they're at the organization.

"Help stack lunches in the morning and then after that I might help run errands or sit at the phone and answer the phone calls," said Ateequa Alcorn.

These kids know by helping save money they are able to help more children in the community.

"I think it's a great experience.  The best things in life are free so just coming here and helping out is a good thing," said Alcorn.

"We've shown the community because of what Christ has done in their lives, they have something to offer back to the community," said City Youth Missions Director Christopher Cowart.

Some volunteers see themselves in the kids they help care for.

"I used to attend City Youth regularly and I loved it so I came back and decided I wanted to do this," said Thomas Toney.

And helping out here, showing others that they can make a difference in their lives and in others means a lot.

"When I first started coming I thought it was just a place to come and hang out but since I've been volunteering it's been a lot more than that," said Alcorn.
