Work nears end on first Mo. stimulus project

OSAGE BEACH, Mo. (AP) - A Missouri construction crew is finishing work on the nation's first project to get started under the federal stimulus plan. The Lake Sun Leader has reported that a new bridge over the Osage River in Tuscumbia is to open Aug. 16.

Construction work on replacing the nearly 80-year-old bridge started minutes after President Barack Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus package into law last year. The bridge carries traffic on Missouri 17 about 30 miles southwest of Jefferson City.

Transportation officials say the bridge will be closed to traffic Thursday until the new bridge opens. That's necessary so the roads can be connected to the new span.
