SOUTHSIDE, AR (KAIT) - The Southside school district has purchased school supplies. For all 1600 students.
Using stimulus money, Title One money and money from increased enrollment has allowed the school to buy in bulk what parents generally have to buy for themselves.
School Superintendent Roger Rich says parents are surprised when they call asking about school lists.
"We tell them all they need is a backpack."
Southside is only one of 3 schools in the state that is doing this project. The first of the bulk ordered supplies arrived on Wednesday. They will be moved to a cooler location and sorted our for classrooms as they arrive.
4th Grade Teacher Elizabeth Cooper says buying the supplies show parents that the school is aware of the economic conditions of the families and that they care about their students.
"We want you to feed your family. We want you to have those resources for other things involving your family. It think it shows the parents that we care."
