Governor Beebe honors Newport hall of famers

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe paid a visit to Region 8 Thursday night to honor several inductees to his alma mater's hall of fame.

Governor Beebe graduated Newport High School in 1964.  Last year he was inducted into the school's hall of fame.  Thursday night at the Newport Country Club it was his turn to introduce two of the five 2010 inductees, John W. Mullins and Bill Keedy, Jr.

Keedy, Class of 1963, was the former head football coach for the Newport Greyhounds and a color commentator for the ASU Red Wolves.  Governor Beebe called Keedy a "legend," leading the team to 17 district championships and two state championships.

He said Mullins, who graduated Newport High School in 1944 and later served as the school district's superintendent, was a "great educator."  Mullins was inducted posthumously.  The award was given to his daughter.

Also inducted Thursday night were U.S. Army Major General James E. Simmons, Class of 1969; Martha Johnson, retired vice president and business development director of Southern Living magazine, who graduated in 1964; and John Minor, Sr., owner of John Minor Crop Insurance, Inc. and Real Estate, Class of 1952.

Governor Beebe told Region 8 News it was "good to be back" and to see some old friends.

The holiday season is usually a time of happiness and enjoyment with family and friends, but that can be different for some suffering from a mental health illness.
