JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU) - The Arkansas State women's soccer team will get their first taste of live game action when they host Ohio Valley Conference foe SIU-Edwardsville Saturday at 1 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Complex.
This will be the only exhibition contest for the Red Wolves to get ready for the 2010 season under first-year head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge.
SIU-Edwardsville went 3-10-2 during last season as an independent and has nine starters returning from that squad and 18 total letterwinners.
Meanwhile, ASU is hot off its best season in school history. In 2009 ASU went 8-10-3 advancing to the semifinals of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Red Wolves were 6-4 at home in 2009. ASU has all but two starters returning from last season and have 16 total letterwinners coming back.
ASU's top returner is sophomore forward Ashley McMurtry who posted four goals and set a single-season record with 8 assists. Junior forward Kara Nitti led the Red Wolves with five goals and ranked second with 13 total points. In goal ASU has sophomore Susan Brown returning who set a single-season record with 108 saves during her freshman campaign and had four shutouts, also a record.
The Red Wolves open the regular season against another OVC opponent on Aug. 22 when they host Tennessee-Martin at the ASU Soccer Complex.
