Jonesboro (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's soccer team downed SIU Edwardsville in their exhibition opener, 3-0 at the ASU Soccer Complex Saturday.
The Red Wolves outpointed the Cougars over the three-thirty minute periods played taking seven shots on goal to SIU's six.
"What we wanted to do, especially for the benefit of the freshman, was to give them an idea of what we want to do this season and what is expected of them and just give them the first taste of college soccer," said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge.
Sophomore forward Ashley McMurtry struck first for the Red Wolves, scoring an unassisted goal in the 35th (34:43) minute of action. Just over four minutes later senior defender Miranda Wiley scored the second goal of the match to put A-State up 2-0.
Sophomore forward Tory Pitts scored a goal on an open net in the 66th minute (65:32) to put the Red Wolves up by their final advantage, 3-0.
Wiley and McMurtry led the Red Wolves with two shots each. McMurtry had two shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Stoltzfus played 60 minutes in goal recording four saves while sophomore Susan Brown played the final 30 minutes of action making two saves.
Meagan Iffrig led SIUE with five shots, two were on goal. Hope Jones also added two shots for the Cougars.
ASU opens regular-season action against Tennessee-Martin at 2 p.m. on Aug. 22 at the ASU Soccer Complex.
