'In God We Trust' OK by Searcy council

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - The national motto as declared by Congess - "In God We Trust" - has been approved by the Searcy City Council for use on city property. A motion approving use of the motto has been used in America as far back as 1814, first appearing on currency in 1864.

Congress required that the phrase be used on all U.S. currency in 1955, then it was declared to be the national motto in 1956. The motion was approved unanimously at a recent Searcy City Council meeting. The action stemmed from a campaign by Jacquie Sullivan, a Bakersfield, Calif., city council member.

Her organization, In God We Trust-America Inc., operates a website that says the group's mission is "to promote patriotism by encouraging elected officials to display our national motto ... in every city hall in America." The website says at least 78 cities have approved motions approving the motto's use, including 14 towns in Arkansas other than Searcy.

Thanksgiving is a time to be with loved ones and enjoy good food, but since that is not an option for everyone, members of the Jonesboro community came together to make sure as many people as possible were fed.
