Tyronza shooting suspect believed to have hung himself

TYRONZA, AR (KAIT) - According to Poinsett County Sheriff Larry Mills, Michael Knight, accused of shooting and killing another man late Saturday night, is dead.

Mills says Knight was found dead around 3:15 a.m. Friday morning in his Poinsett County Detention Center cell after hanging himself.

He says Knight hanged himself with a towel.

TYRONZA, AR (KAIT) – A Region 8 man was charged Monday with first degree murder in the shooting death of a 28-year old man north of Tyronza city limits. According to Poinsett County Sheriff Larry Mills, 50-year old Michael Knight was charged with shooting Whit Jones.

On Aug 14, Poinsett County deputies received a complaint of possible gunshots coming from MB Lane off Hwy 18 north of Tyronza. Upon arrival, Jones was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the stomach.  A .38 caliber Derringer handgun was found nearby.

Knight was subsequently taken into custody at the crime scene in connection with the shooting. According to press releases, Jones and Knight were fighting when Knight allegedly pulled a gun on Jones. Jones then ran around the car to get away, but was still shot.

Knight is is being held in the Poinsett County Detention Center on a $1,000,000 cash only bond.

Both men were from the Tyronza and Marked Tree areas.
