After fatal train collision, questions remain

BONO, AR (KAIT) - Two people were killed Friday morning at a Craighead County railroad crossing.

The one question that will probably never be answered about this accident is why? There is always speculation about causes of accidents like this.  But for the most part, like today, there are no survivors to answer the question.

The accident between a pickup and a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train occurred at the intersection where Craighead County Road 357 crosses the Burlington tracks south of Bono.

The Chevy pickup, driven by 31-year-old Timothy Hall was going south on County Road 357 which parallels the tracks till the crossing turns West. Also in the pickup was Hall's stepson, 6-year-old Caleb Dacus. Apparently Hall was taking Dacus to school at Westside Elementary.

The 7,100 ton mixed freight was going South toward Jonesboro when the accident occurred.

Craighead Deputy Brian Skinner was one of the first on the scene. He describes what he found.

"I just found where the truck was still in front of the train and had been pushed South from the intersection approximately two-thousand feet from the point of impact. Almost to close to a half mile."

The train was finally able to stop about 400 yards from the old Bono Bridge. Emergency crews quickly responded to the accident but both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Caleb was a student at Westside Elementary School. I asked Superintendent Dr. Bryan Duffie what help a school offers at a time like this.

Duffie, "Having school counselors available for students and teachers to talk with even community members. There's a system where part of the Craighead County crisis response team and our counselors are trained in what to do in those situations."

The accident is still under investigation by the Craighead County Sheriff's Office, Arkansas State Police and Burlington Northern railroad investigators

This crossing like many crossings in Craighead County does not have crossing arms nor lights, but you should always approach any railroad crossing with caution.

Deputy Skinner, "This happens time and time again and it still seems to be a problem. The trains can't stop."
