Low grad rates accompany high Ark. lottery sales

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Lottery figures show that some of the strongest ticket sales are in counties with the lowest concentrations of college degrees. Poinsett County has the lowest proportion of college graduates among Arkansas counties at 6.3 percent. Yet the county, with 24,682 people, was among the highest in July lottery ticket sales, with a per-person average of $24.58, just about double the state average.

In July, the most recent month for which lottery sales are available, the state lottery sold $12.43 worth of tickets for every man, woman and child in the state, based on sales of $35,908,542 and the U.S. Census Bureau's 2009 estimate of Arkansas' population at 2,889,450.
