JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- The egg recall has left many "scrambled" and unsure about what eggs are safe. The salmonella scare has been traced back to two Iowa farms recalling over half a billion eggs.
"It was bound to happen eventually. It was lettuce and tomatoes and now eggs," says Lurena Lenear, a customer at Hays Grocery store. She says when the news cracked about the egg scare she took action. "I did look at my carton, and as long as they are telling us what we need to know, I can make an informed decision to buy eggs again."
"We've had a few customers ask if we did have anything effected," says Garret Combs, who is a manager at Hays. "As soon as we get any type of info on any type of recall, we work as quick as we can to get the products of the shelf." Combs explains and wants to ensure customers their product is safe. "We get all of our items from AWG out of Memphis, and luckily none of that were effected by the recall. So everything we have has been a good and still is good."
While some customers say they would rather be safe than sorry. "It's scary...I didn't buy any," says Kenny Beshiers.
Around 1300 cases of salmonella poisoning have been reported since the recall. Cashier Josh Clairday actually got salmonella from eating under-cooked chicken, and says he wouldn't wish it on anybody. "My stomach was all cramped up. I had real bad nausea and vomiting. I had a real bad fever and I was hospitalized for 3 or 4 days." He was sick for nearly two weeks.
But when it comes to any eggs the only way to ensure they're safe.. make sure the egg white and yolk are cooked all the way through. "If you do have any questions or any worries or anything that could be contaminated feel free to ask and if we do know we'll do the best we can to let you know what there is and what we can do to fit it."
