Jonesboro (ASU) – Arkansas State junior forward Michele Clark took a feed from sophomore Jill Fuerman, scoring the only goal of the match in the 97th minute (96:19), giving the Red Wolves the golden goal they needed to take the match, 1-0 over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Friday.
The Red Wolves soccer squad improved to 1-0-1 on the season while the Lady Lions fell to 0-1.
"It's good to get our first victory of the year," said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge. "Our players are excited and making adjustments that we ask them too on the field. There are still things to work on but this win should give our players some confidence and a warrior's spirit as we look for the first winning season in program history."
Clark led the squad with three shots, while as a team the Red Wolves outshot UAPB 18-8 taking eight shots on goal to the Lady Lions four. ASU also took six corner kicks to UAPB's two.
Sophomore goalkeeper Susan Brown made four saves, including three in the first half, notching her first win of the season, while her counterpart Bre-Ann Laypoole made seven saves in goal for the Lady Lions. Silvia Fuentes led UAPB with two shots on goal.
The Red Wolves continue action on the road traveling to Ruston, La. for a matchup Sunday with the Lady Techsters of Louisiana Tech. Kickoff Sunday is set for noon
