BATESVILLE, AR (KAIT) – An investigation is underway into what appended during an explosion Thursday morning in Batesville that injured five workers.

Region 8 News has learned that two of the injured workers were transported to UAMS in Little Rock.  The other three were taken to the White River Medical Center for treatment.

According to Independence County Sheriff Alan Cockrill, workers were digging a tunnel underneath the Batesville Municipal Golf Course and were using explosives. After they set off one charge, workers entered the tunnel to help dig another hole to place explosives when they accidentally hit remnants of the previous explosives.

Mayor Rick Elumbaugh said the construction is due to the city building a new waste water treatment plant, which is causing the company to use explosives to help build tunnels.

Mayor Elumbaugh said the lead contractor on the site is Oscar Renda out of Texas.
