Cape Girardeau, MO (SEMO) - Southeast Missouri posted a near-sweep of the Ohio Valley Conference's weekly football awards Sunday. Matt Scheible was named Offensive Player of the Week, Aaron Grimes was Co-Defensive Player of the Week and Drew Geldbach was voted Special Teams Player of the Week.
A native of Washington, Mo., Scheible ran for a career-high 134 yards and threw for 140 yards and a touchdown, as Southeast began league play with a 30-17 win at Murray State.
Scheible completed 12-of-17 passes and did not get sacked or throw an interception. He averaged 8.4 yards per carry on 16 attempts, including a 60-yard run late in the third quarter. Scheible became the first Southeast quarterback to rush for over 100 or more yards in a game since 2007. He also converted 53 percent of the Redhawks third down opportunities, helping Southeast win its OVC opener for the first time in six years.
Grimes, who hails from Los Angeles, Calif., registered a career-high 14 tackles (six solo) against the Racers. The 14 tackles are the second-most in a game in the OVC this season. The senior also intercepted a pass.
Geldbach, who is from Wildwood, Mo., has not missed a field goal or extra point in two games this year. He scored 12 points on a flawless 3-of-3 field goals and 3-of-3 PATs against Murray State. Geldbach connected on field goals from 40, 47 and 37 yards, respectively.
Austin Peay SS Jeremy Ross (Co-Defensive) and Jacksonville State P/QB Coty Blanchard (Newcomer) round out this week's honorees.
