ASU Tennis wins 13 matches at String & Swing Invitational

Memphis (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team began fall tournament action Friday at the String and Swing Memphis Collegiate Invitational in Memphis, Tenn.  The tournament was hosted by the University of Memphis and stretched throughout the weekend.

"The tournament was a good start to our season," said ASU head coach Marcia Williams.  "There were several nationally-ranked teams playing, so the competition was tough.  Emily Crowe had three match points against No. 107 Miriam Kurdadze of Tulane, and we were excited to see what she was capable of on the court.  I'm very proud of Menna Kamal and Biljana Miloshevska for winning the consolation side of their brackets.  Ioana Teu placed second in her flight and Janie Nowland was third in hers, so we had some outstanding matches this weekend."

The Red Wolves opened action Friday with two rounds of both singles and doubles.  Arkansas State grabbed two singles wins on the day.  A-State newcomer Nowland topped Tennessee-Martin's Johanie Van Zyl 7-5, 6-2, while Teu defeated Tulsa's Bonny Davidson 6-1, 6-4.  ASU also picked up two doubles wins Friday.  Nowland and Miloshevska won over ACU's White and Conrad 8-5, and Ceara Howey and Tina Ojdanic teamed up for a 9-7 win over Edwards and Bennett of Belmont.

Arkansas State saw three singles wins Saturday with Teu, Ojdanic and Menna Kamal each winning in straight sets, while Crowe and Teu picked up ASU's lone doubles win on the day by a score of 8-1 over UTM's Winklemann and Herbold.

Nowland, Miloshevska, Howey and Kamal finished the tournament with singles wins Sunday.  Miloshevska and Kamal both won their consolation brackets.

The ASU squad will hit the courts again when it hosts the Red Wolves Invitational Oct. 1-3 in conjunction with the Arkansas State Homecoming festivities.  The tournament will be played at Allen Park.
