Prize Patrol awards twenty grants in Region 8

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - A group of Region 8 teachers got the surprise of their life Friday, when the Nettleton Education Foundation's "Prize Patrol" awarded grants to teachers for special projects within their classroom.

Third grade recipient, Jamie Crain, says she and her students were stunned. "I was so surprised! We were in the middle of a spelling test and this was a fun reason to stop!"

Jamie says she and her students will be able to do a lot of fun activities in her class thanks to the Nettleton Education Foundation.

"We're gonna use the money for non-fiction books for our classroom and we're gonna do some things like find out how a grocery store is built from the foundation up and we're gonna write a book about it and we're gonna visit Walcott and we're gonna write a brochure. We're gonna do learning activities and try to do writing activities to follow."

President of the Nettleton Education Foundation, Doug Doggett, says NEF has been working to help teachers for ten years, now. "Throughout the year, the Nettleton Education Foundation raises funds so that we can give back to the classroom. So many teachers will spend money out of their own pocket so they can do some special things in the classroom. The Nettleton Education Foundation exists to provide those opportunities to give them unique learning experiences. It brings out creativity in the teachers, they come up with some really neat ideas. Do some learning experiences that are outside the core curriculum that are not budgeted. And we provide those funds to make that happen."

Jamie says people are often unaware of how much teachers spend in their classroom for their kids. "I know that every year my husband is amazed at how much I spend on the classroom out of my own pocket and I think he's more excited than I am that we have someone to support us like this because I don't think we'd be able to have a lot of the things that we do have if it weren't for some organizations like this."

Jamie says she and teachers like her work hard to provide educational, yet memorable experiences for the kids they teach. "I know that I remember from when I was going to school the special things that we did more than the spelling tests and the math tests and things like that. So, I think that's the thing the children take with them over the years and the things they look back on and remember."

It's for this reason teachers, like Jamie, work so hard to establish creative projects for their kids.

Jamie says that NEF is a big part of making those projects possible. "It is amazing. I've gotten a lot of good books for my library and I've been able to do a lot of projects that I would never have been able to do before. I'm just so grateful that we have a foundation like this."

The Nettleton Education Foundation awarded twenty teachers grants, totaling more than five thousand dollars.
