Jonesboro (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's soccer opened up conference action with a 1-0 loss at Florida Atlantic Friday. This marked the first weekend of Sun Belt play as the Red Wolves fell to 4-4-1 on the season.
The match was fairly even with each squad taking 11 shots, the Owls had eight shots on goal to the Red Wolves four.
"We put up a very spirited performance and we are rather unfortunate not to come out with the victory against a quality opposition," said ASU head coach Tafadzwa Ziyenge. "Credit to FAU for scoring early and then doing a great job of defending. I looked my girls in the eye and clearly they still have the fight in them and we still believe we are too good of a side not to stake our place in the playoffs. I know as well as my players that we are going to find our way into the playoffs."
Jesse Shugg scored an early goal in the 12th minute to put FAU on top, 1-0. ASU scored the tying goal but the shot was called back, thus neutralizing the goal.
Susan Brown played all 90 minutes in goal for ASU, making seven saves.
ASU had four players record multiple shots in Christine Giles, Miranda Wiley, Michele Clark and Kara Nitti.
ASU continues action on Sunday in Florida facing off against FIU. Match time is set for 1 p.m. EST.
