HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (HU) – Alabama-Huntsville junior forward Kyle Gonclaves' goal in the 39th minute gave the Chargers a 1-0 victory over Harding on Friday in the Gulf South Conference men's soccer opener for both teams.
Gonclaves settled the ball in the box off passes from Tomokai Matsuo and Laz Barreiro and scored his first goal of the season and only the fourth in 2010 for Alabama-Huntsville (2-5, 1-0).
Harding (0-5, 0-1) had its chances. In the 21st minute, sophomore Josh Ireland's blast hit the cross bar. The Bisons also had six shots on goal, including two by senior forward Glen Stewart.
Harding outshot Alabama-Huntsville 17-11, marking only the second time this season the Bisons had more shots than their opponents.
The game was the fourth in a five-game road swing for Harding. The Bisons wrap up the road trip Sunday against Delta State in another GSC game.
After allowing five goals in a loss to Northeastern State on Tuesday, Harding's defense performed much better against Alabama-Huntsville. The Bisons allowed only six shots on goal, compared to 15 on Tuesday, and senior goalkeeper Will Reno made five stops. Harding also yielded only three corner kicks.
It was the second time this season Harding has suffered a shutout. The other came in a 2-0 loss to Palm Beach Atlantic in the season opener.
