Jonesboro (ASU) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team won three flights of singles action and a doubles flight this weekend as it hosted the Red Wolves Invitational at Allen Park in Jonesboro.
"I am pleased with how well our girls played this weekend," said ASU head coach Marcia Williams. "We had a team in the finals of each doubles flight and a girl in every flight of singles except one. We won three of five flights of singles and one of two doubles, and it was great to have four Sun Belt Conference teams at our tournament."
ASU newcomer Janie Nowland was the last Red Wolf on the courts as she won flight one of singles play. She topped Western Kentucky's Alex Crofford 6-1, 6-1 before defeating UALR's Veronique Luksich 6-4, 6-3. Nowland took the flight with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 victory over WKU's Monta Reinfelde. A-State's Emily Crowe took third in the same flight, topping Luksich 6-2, 7-5.
Senior Jenny Herring won the second singles flight, defeating ULM's Medy Blankvoort 6-3, 6-3, UALR's Viktoriva Plyuta 6-1, 6-0 and ULM's Vivian Polak 6-3, 6-1. Arkansas State's Ioana Teu topped Plyuta 7-5, 0-6, 6-2 to place third in the flight.
Red Wolves newcomer Biljana Miloshevska also won her flight in singles action. She downed Central Arkansas' Kazumi Otani 6-2, 6-0, WKU's Carrie True 6-1, 6-1 and ULM's Ana Burjaili 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Menna Kamal landed third in flight four, defeating her own teammate Ceara Howey 7-5, 6-3, while Tina Ojdanic fell in the championship match of flight five to UCA's Kati Andersen 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, Herring and Howey teamed up to win flight two, taking down WKU's Vucina and Mason 8-2, UALR's Garay and Pierce 8-0 and ULM's Burjaili and Blankvoort 8-4.
Miloshevska and Nowland held on to make the championship match of flight one but fell to ULM's Polak and Gaigher 8-5. Crowe and Teu placed third in the flight with a win over UALR's Luksich and Plyuta 8-5.
