Mets fire manager and GM

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Mets have fired manager Jerry

Manuel and relieved general manager Omar Minaya of his duties, an

expected shake-up of the big-spending ballclub after it completed

its second straight losing season.

The Mets say a search is under way for a new GM, who will work

with the team to hire a new manager.

Chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon says the team is "extremely

disappointed in this year's results and the failures of the past

four seasons."

The Mets went 79-83 in Manuel's second full season as manager.

Promoted from bench coach after the midnight firing of Willie

Randolph in June 2008, he has an overall record of 204-213.

Manuel is the seventh manager this season to lose his job.
